Each state's site is run by that state. Search there, then claim there, for free. Also try maiden names, old spellings and a late relative's name.
How to claim unclaimed money in Virginia
- Search your name on the official Virginia site. Try your maiden name, nicknames, initials and any old business names too.
- Match the address. Results usually show an old address or city. If it's one you lived at, it's likely yours.
- Start a claim on the state's site. You'll usually confirm your identity and upload documents such as a photo ID and proof of that old address.
- Watch for follow-up. Larger claims or claims for a deceased relative may need extra paperwork. Check your email and mail.
- Get paid by check or direct deposit from the state.
Search more than one place
If you've lived outside Virginia, search those states too, or use the free multi-state search at MissingMoney.com. For federal money (old savings bonds, some pensions, VA life insurance), start at USA.gov.
Watch out for fees
Companies sometimes mail letters offering to recover your money for a percentage. You can almost always do it yourself for free on the state's site. Read any agreement carefully before signing.

Treat yourself

Give back
Pass some of it forward to a local food bank, school or a cause you care about.
